This day is call’d the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam’d,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
Sunday 25th October was St Crispins Day and also marked the 600th anniversary of the battle of Azincourt and, and whilst we were unable to muster similar numbers to Henry V, Burton Joyce put forward a good company of archers to the contingent.
After a brief meeting in the carriage park at the Ye old Lord Nelson public house, we set off to the battle ground at the ancient village Southwell.
Moving swiftly in to the 21st Century, we had eight members take part and turn up on time (which was a surprise in itself as the clocks went back the night before). The weather was dry with no wind, and when the sun came out, was very pleasant. We were treated to a rendition of Shakespeare’s Henry V St. Crispin’s Day speech made by Chris Joyce said with as much gravitas as he could muster on a Sunday morning.
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day
Suitably inspired we all lined up on the line and the competition began, with great expectations for lunchtime when the Pie and Beans arrived. There was mild interest to see whether Sherwood had swapped with Bassetlaw and we would have Peas instead of Beans; as Bassetlaw’s Peas had a distinct look of Baked Bean about them earlier in the month.
During lunch there was much asking’s of “what have you got”, aside from comments like “Pie and Beans” there was occasional answers of “not very much”, “Terrible” and “Not too bad”. Some were better than expected, some not quite so good.
The sun decided it had been out enough during the day and swiftly disappeared, turning the air cool and the air slightly damp. Fifty yards saw some disasters and some turnarounds, but whatever the final score, many individual goals were reached. So congratulations all around to everyone who took part. Our next outdoor ventures will no doubt be a lot chillier than Sunday.
