Targets in the Mist
A few hardy members turned out in the early morning mist to set up the targets for this years competition, little knowing that they would need GPS navigation to find their way back to the hut; to say the mist was thick was a bit of an understatement.
At 9:00 a.m. prompt everyone lined up and promptly stepped back again as the targets were practically invisible in the mist. Much mutterings and discussions later, it was decided to wait a short while and then start with a lookout posted near the hedge to intercept lost walkers. Thanks go to Shawn for volunteering to be lookout; his hat was just about the only thing we could see of him until the mist lifted.
In an attempt to even the playing field, a novel approach at handicapping the better archers was used. Rather than using everyone’s handicap and adding in an allowance, it was suggested that those members who have shot a Bowman score this year only count the best five from six arrows.
The sun soon burnt off the mist and we could finally see the targets and overall it turned out to be a very nice day. Number were a little down on previous years, but we had a good mix of seniors and juniors attending as well as a “fuddle” at the end. Alison was practicing for next years’ Bake Off and provided nibbles throughout the morning in the forms of a mountain of scrumptious cake which went down extremely well.
