Medieval Barebow Shoot

1428

Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, Robin Hood, the Knights of St John (or should that be the Knights 20151101_084603-1-1who say Ni?) and Obi Wan Kenobi all made an appearance at the Burtune Jorz Archerye feld.

A merry band of archers assembled on a slightly foggy morning down at ye olde shooting range to shoot a few pointy sticks at ye buttes.  The promise of free pork cobs with stuffing and apple sauce followed by Alison’s famous cake probably had nothing to due with the large turn out.

The initial task seemed to be whether we could use every target the club owned, but we finally settled for twelve targets plus Dick’s extraordinary Wand target (more on that later).

ShaiA short speech was Given by Sir Christopher of Burtune to introduce new members, including Shai’s recently discovered younger brother, and then the company dispersed to random targets to begin.  Being short of a few sighting aids, the first shots of many were a little lacking in accuracy and buried themselves in the soft grass which took a little while to find.

The variety of scoring methods on the targets vexed many, with the Phoenix proving to be the downfall of a goodly number, with Lord Baz of Greater Honker being heard to say “I’ve just managed to break even!”.  Additionally, a number of new trick shots were invented during the day, notably:

  1. How many arrows can you get in the target (not the actual target, but the stand) which will henceforth be known as “doing a Mel”
  2. Pin the Handle on the Stand; admirably attempted by Andrew

However, the prize of the day has to go to Obi Wan Kenobi or Bard the Dragon Slayer for not only hitting the Dragon’s heart once, but twice!  It’s no wonder that with this superb feat of Archery, that Shawn went on the claim the main prize of the day.

New to many was the Wand target.  The idea being that if you make the bell ring you get 30 points or knock the bell off, 50 points.  The wand being only about an inch in diameter, easy I hear you say.  Aside from Dick, the only people to ring the bell were Lizzie and Mel with the rest of us missing at ten yards.20151101_114722small

The traditional Bag of Gold was won by new member Rob who admirably resisted purchasing the first round.

After shooting, wonderful pork roasts magically appeared along with stuffing and apple sauce followed by delicious sponge cake and Keith’s spooky shortcake fingers.

The day was a huge success, so many thanks to Maid Marion aka Karen for organising the whole event, including the targets and Shai’s younger brother for ably assisting.
